EEG Measurements

One of the stages in the Brainwave Conditioning System™ is to measure and assess your brainwave patterns. This is called an electroencephalogram, or EEG for simplicity!

Our thoughts and mental processes within our brains occur by electrical impulses traveling from brain cell to brain cell along neural pathways. These impulses are called brainwaves. Depending on our current thoughts and actions, the strength (or amplitude) and speed (or frequency) of brainwave activity varies. The more relaxed we become, the slower the speed of activity. Conversely the more active, or even stressed, we become the faster the frequency.

An EEG is a system whereby we can measure this activity. It is now done using sophisticated computer technology. It is a non-invasive process whereby a few electrodes are attached to your scalp using a sticky paste like substance. These electrodes can then detect the electrical activity within your brain and feed that information into the computer for analysis. The EEG measurements are for assessment only and are designed to the standards and for the protocols of the LSI Brainwave Conditioning System. This process will be performed by your Life Systems Certified Trainer™ (LSCT)

From this information the LSCT is able to determine what training protocols you would gain the most benefit from. This may be to increase concentration, improve balance and coherence between the left and right hemispheres of your brain or perhaps to reduce stress levels. It is this stage which is the basis for the AVE training.

EEG reading

Our mental functions occur optimally at specific brainwave frequencies. For example the input of information, such as reading, occurs most efficiently at a high Alpha or SMR frequency. However the storage or recall of information occurs most efficiently at a Theta level. You can quickly understand that for an effective learning strategy you need to be able to shift between the two mental gears. A sports person needs to be able to shift between the different level and to be able to access an SMR state for total concentration and focus.

A simple summary of the different brainwave levels and their names is given below.

The different brainwave frequencies can be categorised into…
Low Beta
15 - 30 htz
High level of mental activity: decision making and problem solving.
SMR
12 - 14 htz
Ideal for heightened concentration, and being “in the zone”
Low Alpha
7 - 11 htz
Relaxed yet alert state of mind: Best for reading and listening.
Theta
4 - 6 htz
Optimal mind state for memorising and recalling information, also ideal for creativity and development of IQ.
Delta
1 - 3 htz
Deep physical relaxation.
